A community effort to rename Cesar Chavez Lane in Boise as Huerta Lane

Not erasure. Correction.

What This Is

This initiative is focused on renaming Cesar Chavez Lane in Boise as Huerta Lane to better reflect the full history of the farmworker movement and the leadership behind it.This is not about removing or diminishing that history. It is about ensuring that public recognition reflects the broader contributions that shaped it.

Why Huerta

Dolores Huerta was a co-founder, organizer, and negotiator whose leadership helped shape the direction and success of the farmworker movement. She played a central role in strategy, advocacy, and labor negotiations. Her influence continues to be felt across labor and civil rights efforts today. She is also credited with popularizing the phrase “Sí, se puede,”
a message of collective action and perseverance that continues to resonate across generations.
This initiative seeks to recognize that legacy in a way that is visible, lasting, and aligned with the values the movement represents.

Why Now

Public understanding of history evolves. As that understanding deepens, communities are faced with an opportunity to revisit how public spaces reflect the people and values they choose to honor. This effort is part of that process.

Current Status

This initiative is in an early stage.Initial outreach has begun with Boise State student leadership, Ada County, and the City of Boise. Conversations are currently underway.Community input and stakeholder engagement will shape how this effort develops.
